24. My Life as a Book (Tashjian)

Dubbed a "reluctant reader" by his teacher, twelve-year-old Derek spends summer vacation learning important lessons even though he does not complete his summer reading list.

  9. I liked when Derek was hiding from his Mom in his attic and his Mom tried to bribe him to read by chocolate chips but Derek wanted more chocolate chips. :)

    He wanted to continue his investigation on the girl who had supposedly "saved" him from drowning.

  11. I like that the author put in pictures along the side of Derek to show what he was doung and feeling to add a sense of humor.

  12. Something I liked about this book was how the author used real locations. In most books, the authors make places up. I loved this feature of the book.

    Something else I noticed about the book was how much each character was very descriptive. Derek described his learning camp very carefully. He also described his feelings very well.

    A: Bodi {Dereck's dog] grabs him by the diaper well he's about to go in to the ocean and saves his life.
    Q: What does he do in the Summer?
    A: He goes to Summer School, goes to his grandma's, and goes to Marth's Vineyard.

    A: It was a learning camp.

    A: To learn more about how Susan James drowned while "rescuing him."

    Q: How did Susan James actually drown?
    A: She was supposed to babysitting Derek, but she took him to the beach where she was meeting with some people. The riptides were too strong and pulled her under the water. Bodi actually saved Derek.

    I think that this is a great book if you need something to read really quick.
